For Patagonia the clothing brand, spreading knowledge about being a responsible company is a key part of their company. They strive to be transparent with the consumer and be a sustainable company.
On their website they have a site called The Footprint Chronicles. This section has a map that displays all the farms, factories and textile mills that they use. The map allows the viewer to click on a specific dot and it will bring up a specific facility.
Once on that facility it discusses the practices of the factory, number of workers male vs. female, languages spoken and what is produced there. The map feature allows the viewer to both see the location of the factory and see the worldwide impact Patagonia has. This shows that Patagonia is a global business that is trying to practice ethical practices around the globe.
I enjoy this info graphic because I am a public relations and geography major. I think that there is a lot that maps can do for showing information and relating to the public.
Using a map to show the global impact and how they trace their practices is a smart initiative. It shows that Patagonia is thinking about its impact globally and how it affects the public. Some companies in the past have gotten in trouble for how they treat workers at foreign factories. However, Patagonia is eliminating this from their company by being open about where they produce products.
It think the interactive feature of the info graphic makes it exciting for a consumer and makes them want to be more involved in the cause. Also, Patagonia could use graphics similar to this throughout more of their site. Such as, under each product they could create a map about where each part of the product is from. This sounds like a lot of work, however they could make a code that could easily create the maps according to this feature.
The map is a great starting part of Patagonia, however I do think they could really build upon what they are doing. By integrating maps into more parts of their campaigns it would allow the company to be more transparent with the consumer and bring more consumer into the company by the interactive nature a maps.
I know, I am bias when talking about how maps are helpful to company because I am a geography major. However, I do truly think they help to create strategic communication and can help with transparency.
